Temples and Custom
Temples
As Kukup is a village situated by the sea, naturally the villagers respect the sea. The ocean is boundless, and the weather is unpredictable. That is the reason why the residents build the temples, to pray for mild weather throughout the year and safety for their daily activities.
Despite the temples are small, they do not stop people from visiting and praying. For the most part, the temples are built from donations from the villagers. Essentially, the temples are traditions of the Chinese people. Furthermore, it is the proof of the long history of the village.
Custom
Our ancestors were from China. Having left their hometown with nothing to rely on, faith was their only support. For this reason, they brought the traditional culture and custom from their homeland to Kukup and continue to worship the gods. Although different temples have different customs, they have brought the relationship among villagers in Kukup more closely.
On some occasions, there may be Getai, whereby some singers will be invited to perform on a stage for the celebration. On top of that, it is as a form of showing gratefulness for the gods’ protection throughout the years. There will be a lot of people on these occasions, as a result, it is sure to have a special atmosphere of celebration. There will also be a series of praying ceremonies during the day of the special occasions.
Apart from that, relatives will visit Kukup and join in the celebration, and there will be grand feasts during these special occasions. Throughout the year, there are many occasions for these praying ceremonies, with a common prayer which is for the village’s prosperity and safety.
