Houses in the early days are built with Attap leaves, including the roof and four walls, while the floor is made with wooden planks. As you can imagine, the Attap walls are not practical. Hence, walls are later built with wood.
As Kukup is located at the seaside, the houses in the village need an additional layer of net over the Attap roofs. As a result, the Attap roofs are not so easily blown away by the strong winds.
After about two years of strong winds and sunlight, the Attap roof will begin to dry and fall off. Whenever there is a gust of wind, the dried Attap leaves will rain down like snowflakes. Sometimes there may also be giant centipedes, dead lizards, and even cat faeces.
